One kidney
could give Kyle
a full life back.

Kyle Scriven has kidney disease and is currently on dialysis seven nights a week. He and his wife Shanna are hoping to start a family — a transplant would mean being fully present for every moment of it. A living donor could change everything.

You don't have to be a blood type match to help. Even incompatible donors can trigger a kidney swap that gets Kyle a kidney from someone who is compatible.

About Kyle

A life on pause — that a donor could restart.

Kyle Scriven is a husband, son, brother, uncle — and a lover of film, Arsenal FC, and everything the DMV area has to offer. Born in New Jersey to Bahamian parents, he's spent 26 years building a life in the DC/MD/VA area.

Kyle with family — the life he's fighting to get back to.

In 2015, Kyle was diagnosed with kidney disease. For years, he worked hard to manage his condition — but it continued to progress. He now does peritoneal dialysis at home seven nights a week. While dialysis is keeping him alive, it isn't a long-term solution. It affects his energy, his schedule, and the spontaneity of everyday life.

Without a transplant, Kyle could wait four to five years for a deceased donor kidney. A living donor would dramatically shorten that timeline — and potentially give him back the life he's been fighting to hold onto.

A transplant would mean being fully present with his family, freedom to travel, and the ability to pursue something he and his wife Shanna are working toward together: becoming parents.

You don't have to be a match to help. Kidney Paired Donation (the "kidney swap" program) means that even if you aren't compatible with Kyle directly, you could still donate — and trigger a chain that gets Kyle a kidney from someone who is.

The Process

What happens if you decide to explore donation?

01

Fill out the questionnaire

It takes about 10 minutes. You'll answer basic health and lifestyle questions. This is completely confidential — Kyle does not receive your contact information unless you choose to share it.

02

Get evaluated

The transplant team contacts you for a medical evaluation. This is free and covers blood tests, imaging, and a health history review. You can stop at any point — there is no obligation to continue.

03

Donate — and change a life

The surgery is minimally invasive (4 small incisions), with a typical 3-day hospital stay. Donors live full, healthy lives with one kidney. All medical costs are covered. Many donors say it's the most meaningful thing they've ever done.

Common Questions

What you're probably wondering.

Do I have to be the same blood type as Kyle?
Not necessarily. Kyle's blood type is O positive. If you're O positive or O negative, you're a potential direct match. But even if you're a different blood type, you could still help Kyle through Kidney Paired Donation (see below).
What is Kidney Paired Donation (the "kidney swap")?
If you want to donate but aren't compatible with Kyle, you can join a paired donation program. You donate to a compatible recipient, and someone compatible with Kyle donates to him. These "chains" can involve multiple pairs — last year alone, over 700 transplants happened this way. Learn more at Hopkins →
Will donating affect my long-term health?
Research consistently shows that healthy people live full, normal lives with one kidney. Donors are carefully screened to ensure they can donate safely. Your remaining kidney compensates over time. Studies show donor life expectancy is comparable to — or even better than — the general population, likely because donors are thoroughly vetted for good health before surgery.
What does the surgery look like?
Kidney donation has been minimally invasive since 1995. The procedure (laparoscopic nephrectomy) uses four small incisions. Most donors are in the hospital for just 2–3 days and return to desk work within 2–4 weeks. Recovery from more physical work typically takes 4–6 weeks.
Who pays for the medical costs?
You pay nothing. All medical expenses related to the evaluation and surgery are covered — either by the recipient's insurance or by federal programs. There are also programs to help with travel, lodging, and lost wages. The National Living Donor Assistance Center (NLDAC) can help cover non-medical costs.
Is my inquiry confidential?
Yes, completely. When you fill out the questionnaire or contact the transplant center, Kyle does not receive your personal information unless you explicitly authorize it. You can explore whether donation is right for you privately and without any obligation to continue.
Do I have to live near Kyle or near a listed center?
No. You can be evaluated at any accredited transplant center near you — the centers coordinate with each other. Living donors routinely donate across state lines and even across the country. Geography is not a barrier.
What if I'm not sure I'm healthy enough?
Let the transplant team decide that — not assumptions. Many people who initially worry they're "not healthy enough" are approved after evaluation. Common concerns like mild high blood pressure, age, or past minor health issues don't automatically disqualify you. The only way to know is to start the process.
Can I change my mind?
Absolutely, at any point. Filling out the questionnaire is not a commitment. Beginning evaluation is not a commitment. You can stop at any stage, for any reason, without explanation. Donation must be entirely voluntary.
What if I just want to share Kyle's story instead?
That matters too. The more people who see this page, the better Kyle's chances. Share this link (kidney4kyle.com) on social media. Every share is a real act of hope.
